An intermittent control model during fixational eye movements

(in English) Fixational eye movements consist of two components: drift-tremor (DRT) and microsaccades (MS). In this study, we explore roles played by DRT and MS in the maintenance of eye posture. Focusing on the fact that DRT behaves like Brownian motion and MS are impulsive, we propose an intermittent control model, in which an active feedback controller for maintaining the eye posture is intermittently switched off for the most of time and on for the remaining very brief period of time. Mathematically, such a model can be described by a linear Langevin equation (with Gaussian additive noise) and a sequence of control inputs modeled by Dirac’s delta functions. We express solutions of the intermittent control model by a stochastic process that approximates the DRT as a Wiener process with drift and MS as a sum of two types of Poisson processes with positive and negative constant amplitudes, and then analyze dynamic of the process. As a result, we derive an antagonistic relationship between the linear trend of DRT and the net amplitude of MS for stable fixation, which is necessary for the process to be stably bounded. Moreover, we show that, in both experimental data and approximated stochastic process, a certain relationship between the linear trend of DRT and the net amplitude of MS needs to be hold for a task of fixational eye movements for gaze targets located at different directions.
