Evaluation of periosteitis in equine cortical bone by ultrasonic method

(in English) Using an ultrasonic pulse method, we evaluated the distribution of longitudinal wave velocity in the cortical bone of the right third metatarsal bone of 100-month-old equine with inflammation and 53-month-old healthy equines. Moreover, intensity of HAp crystal orientation and BMD at the same site were evaluated by using the X-ray diffractometer and High Resolution peripheral Quantitative CT (HR-pQCT). As a result, the wave velocities, intensities of HAp crystal orientation, and BMD values decreased in the inflamed area. It was also confirmed that the wave velocity strongly depended on the HAp crystal orientation.
