[Poster Presentation] A study on landmine imaging by handheld GPR ALIS

(in English) For humanitarian demining, we are developing a hand-held ground penetrating radar (GPR) ALIS, as an alternative tool to conventional electromagnetic induction (EMI) sensors. When the radar transmits a radar signal, it is strongly reflected at the ground surface due to the large difference in the relative permittivity of soil and air. The reflected wave overlaps the signal from the target and makes imaging results worse. Management of the reflection is an important issue for GPR. In a hand-held GPR, the ground reflection is usually not uniform due to the vibration of the stand-off distance while scanning by hand and the surface roughness. Therefore, some parts of the ground reflection signal shade the signal from a target at a shallow depth and make it difficult to identify the target. We proposed a new method to deal with the problem by correcting the phase of the received signal. In this method, the frequency to make the phase equal is selected from the range dominated by the surface reflection. The phase of the received signal is corrected so that it becomes equal at the frequency. Since the surface reflection shifts to the original depth, the landmine signal at a shallow depth appeared more clearly.
