To realize on-board optical circuits, a direct optical coupling method between a polymer optical waveguide and an optical fiber is investigated. The direct coupling between a waveguide core and a multimode fiber (MMF) is performed during the waveguide fabrication in the Mosquito method. The Mosquito method is a fabrication technique of polymer optical waveguides utilizing a microdispenser, which has capabilities of fabricating graded-index circular cores with free wiring patterns. At first, a waveguide with a 100-μm core is directly coupled to a 105-μm core MMF and its coupling loss is evaluated. In the evaluation, the influence of a taper shaped waveguide core formed at the coupling section on the coupling loss is theoretically investigated. In addition, the direct coupling process is visualized for determining the conditions to directly couple even a smaller 50-μm core waveguide and a standard MMF. Finally, a waveguide with a 50-μm core is directly coupled to an MMF with a 50-μm core widely deployed and its coupling loss is evaluated. |
