This study clarifies the effects of meal style on communication based on the behavior analysis of the co-eating of older adults. In a previous study, we conducted a dietary experiment in which the same menu was provided in individual and platter formats to four groups consisting of six older adults. Results showed that the meal format may affect the conversation structure of the participants. For example, a meal served on a platter was associated with more conversation topics than was a meal served individually. In this paper, we transcribed the gaze directions of the participants and analyzed their relationship with the number of conversation topics. Results show that the characteristics associated with the platter format include not only the behavior of separating from the platter, but also the behavior of participants who have run out of food on their platter as they more frequently look at the speaker. Furthermore, it was suggested that the endpoint of a turn provided the timing for the action of separating food, which ended the current topic. |
