A Study on the Effect of MU-RTS/CTS for Multu-User Hidden Nodes to Throughput in IEEE 802.11ax Dense Environments

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, the number of wireless LAN terminals, such as smartphones, has been increasing rapidly.Due to the increase in the number of wireless LAN access pointers and other devices, the effect of Overlapping Basic Service Sets (OBSS), which communicate on the same channel within an area, has become significant. In such a dense environment, the throughput in wireless LAN is greatly reduced. In the IEEE802.11ax wireless LAN standard, multiuser transmission, which allocates frequency resources to multiple terminals for simultaneous communication, is standardized to achieve high efficiency. In addition, Multi User-Request to Send/Clear to Send (MU-RTS/CTS) has been
standardized as a function to improve the success rate of multi-user transmission. However, the effect of MU-RTS/CTS has not been clarified because of the complexity of the hidden terminal problem in dense environments. In this paper, we simulate a dense environment by computer simulation and show the usefulness of MU-RTS/CTS in multiple Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) with and without MU-RTS/CTS.
We confirmed that the use of MU-RTS/CTS for Downlink (DL) increased the MAC throughput of the entire BSS more than 45% for all MCS in the dense environment.
