[Invited Lecture] Standardization Activities of IEEE 802.11be Wireless LAN Systems

(in English) Demand for ultra-high resolution video transmission such as 8K video, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) has continued to expand. Cloud gaming and remote office are important use cases as well. To provide these services or applications, extremely high throughput, ultra-high capacity and low latency communications should be achieved. Especially, further demand for these services or applications will be required because of transformation of life style due to covid-19. The IEEE 802.11be task group (TGbe), which develops the mainstream wireless LAN standard, is working on new features for next-generation wireless LANs. The IEEE 802.11be will adopt modulation schemes up to 4096 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), maximum of 16 spatial streams for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and channel bandwidth of a maximum of 320 MHz. In addition, the IEEE 802.11be will define multi-link transmission and multi-access point (AP) coordination as new features. These features enable faster and more reliable transmission. As a result, the IEEE 802.11be will be able to achieve more than 30 Gbit/s for maximum throughput at the media access control service access point (SAP). This manuscript explains recent standardization trends and activities of the IEEE 802.11be.
