System Design Consideration for Aircraft Position Verification Method using TDOA and AOA

(in English) ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) is one of the next generation aeronautical surveillance systems, where an aircraft periodically broadcasts its own GPS positions to ground facilities and other aircraft.
Although ADS-B can provide accurate aircraft positions, the positions reported from the aircraft should be verified at the ground before actually providing them to Air-Traffic-Control (ATC) applications.
For this purpose, position verification methods using TDOA (Time Difference of Arrival) and AOA (Angle of Arrival) have been proposed.
However, the actual performance of the methods depends on the conditions such as the receiver positions.
Therefore, this paper proposes a system design method that estimates the expected performance.
Numerical examples showed that the separation between the receivers and the receiver performance are important factors.
Also, improvement by adding the AOA method was found effective for a condition where the performance of the TDOA method degrades.
