Joint transmit-receive diversity (JTRD) is one of diversity techniques to mitigate the degradation of communication quality due to multipath fading. In JTRD, the transmitter and receiver cooperate so as to maximize the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). On the other hand, eigenmode beamforming (EMBF) technique is known to transmit multiple data streams by taking advantage of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channel. The transmit and receive weight matrices are unitary matrices composed of the right and left singular vectors, respectively. In this paper, it is shown that the transmit and receive diversity weight vectors of optimal JTRD are respectively equivalent to the right and left singular vectors which correspond to the first singular value and accordingly, that optimal JTRD corresponds to the single-stream EMBF using the first singular value. In optimal JTRD, the achievable channel capacity improves as the fading correlation at the receiver side gets stronger. We try to understand such a behavior from a viewpoint of EMBF in correlated Rayleigh fading channels. By Monte-Carlo numerical computation assuming two-antenna receiver case, such a behavior of optimal JTRD is shown to come from a fact that as the fading correlation gets stronger, the 2nd singular value (eigenvalue) deteriorates rapidly and, in return, the first singular value (eigenvalue) gets stronger. |
