The sucking reflex is one of the primitive human reflexes and enables an infant to suck milk from the mother’s nipples. During sucking, the tongue undergoes peristaltic movements, in which the tongue normally moves from the tip to the root of the tongue. We have measured the tongue force in about 200 infants and measured the characteristics of the peristaltic movements. In this study, we simulated tongue movements using a four-joint link mechanism and constructed an oral cavity model in which the main components such as the tongue, palate, the negative pressure force, etc. are integrated. The results showed that the measurements obtained using the oral cavity model simulator were similar to those obtained from an actual oral cavity. Specifically, the characteristics of the force waveform were similar and the amount of milk leaked from the baby bottle in the simulated environment was almost the same as the amount of milk taken by infants. |
