Observation of gravity flow with acoustic sensors on deep seafloor -- Characteristic signal and peculiar signal --
Ryoichi Iwase (JAMSTEC) US2021-27
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) On the deep seafloor off Tokachi in Hokkaido and Hatsushima Island in Sagami Bay, turbidity currents and mudflows generated by earthquakes which are collectively called gravity flows have been observed by the submarine cabled observatories of Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). The acoustic sensor detects the gravitational flow as a change in the flow velocity by the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). On the other hand, regarding the turbidity current associated with the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake, a peculiar signal was also detected by the hydrophone. However, the origin is not well understood. It was examined during the ongoing rescue work of long-term observation data.
