Fe-N thin films are prepared on MgO single-crystal substrates by reactive sputtering. The influence of substrate temperature on the γ'-Fe4N phase formation is investigated. Furthermore, the magnetostriction coefficients, λ100 and λ111, of γ' phase are experimentally determined. A poly-crystalline film composed of γ' and α" phases is formed when the substrate temperature is RT. The film prepared at 200 °C involves γ' epitaxial crystal in addition to γ' poly-crystal, whereas that prepared at 400 °C consists of only γ' single-crystal. However when the substrate temperature increases up to 600 °C, a single-crystal film composed of α phase is formed. A moderate substrate temperature of about 400 °C is effective in the formation of γ' single-crystal film. The γ' single-crystal film shows a large positive λ100 value of –75×10–6 and a large negative λ111 value of +220×10–6. The present study has shown that γ'-Fe4N phase is one of the strong candidates for future rare-metal free magnetostrictive materials. |
