Omni-Directional Image Representation in GAN-based Image Generator

(in English) The omni-directional image generation from a snapshot image taken by an ordinary camera has been developed using conditional generative adversarial networks (cGAN). This method can be utilized for various applications such as virtual reality and social network services. Although the equirectangular projection is widely used for the omni-directional image representation, the cube-map projection has less distortion at the poles. In this study, these projections were compared to examine the better representation in the cGAN-based omni-directional image generator. For these projections, padding methods before the discriminator in cGAN were developed to preserve the continuities at the edges of the generated omni-directional image. As a result of evaluating the generated images, it was found that the equirectangular projection is more suitable for the omni-directional image generator.
