Higher-Order Ambisonics (HOA) is a method of sound field reproduction, which usually uses mode matching to control expansion coefficients in the spherical harmonic domain. In HOA, the area of the reproduction region shrinks with increasing frequency when the truncation order is constant. When the reproduction region is smaller than the listener’s head, binaural signals observed in the reproduced field are degraded, especially at the contralateral ear to an arrival direction of wavefronts from a primary source in the primary field. First, this paper numerically shows that the reproduction error at the contralateral ear is caused by the excessively large driving signal level of secondary sources located at positions not corresponding to the direction of arrival of the primary-source wavefronts. Next, this paper proposes a method to suppress the large driving signal level by weighting the driving signal of each secondary source in the mode matching. The proposed method determines weighting coefficients based on the driving signal at each secondary source position derived from an analytical HOA assuming a continuous distribution of secondary sources. The numerical simulation reveals that the proposed method reduces the reproduction error of the signal at the contralateral ear by suppressing the driving signal level of the secondary sources. |
