[Invited Talk] Antenna-Coupled Electrode Electro-Optic Modulators for Beyond 5G Mobile Communication Systems and Millimeter-Wave Radars

(in English) An antenna-coupled electrode electro-optic (EO) modulator is promising for the applications to 5G/beyond-5G mobile communication systems and millimeter-wave radar systems owing to the excellent characteristics on passive and low-signal distortion operations. By analyzing the antenna-coupled electrode in detail with the 3-dimensional model of an EO-crystal-film and a low-k glass plate stacked structure, the electric field enhancement factor of over 1,000 times of the irradiated wireless field can be obtained along a standing-wave modulation electrode, which enables us to have a compact wireless-optical signal converter without external power supply. The designed EO modulator for the W-band operation was fabricated using a 50-m-thick LiNbO3 crystal film and a 250-m-thick fluorine-based resin substrate and its signal conversion characteristic from the W-band wireless to optical signals were demonstrated successfully. In addition, by combining with the photonic conversion technique with a commercially available phase modulator, the IF conversion of the W-band signal to ~20 GHz band was also demonstrated.
