Environment perception during walking based on vibro-stimuli generated from distance variation

(in English) We propose the method providing the visually impaired users with environmental information via vibro-stimuli depends on distance variation. We have developed a head-mounted wearable device equipped with a 2-dimensional distance sensor and five vibro-motors arranged around the head. The vibration magnitude of vibro-motors is defined as not static distance to the obstacle, but dynamic distance variation caused from the user movement. We compare and verify the ideal vibration stimuli simulated in a specific environment and the vibro-stimuli converted from the distance change by sensing the actual environment. We confirm whether the vibration presented by the proposed system is able to present important information for the user to understand the environment, and examine the vibro-stimulus that should be given to the user.
