We report experimental results on a series of radar and imaging techniques in the terahertz-wave range based on resonant tunneling diode (RTD) oscillators. The radar types include: the amplitude-modulated continuous-wave (AMCW) radar, the frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar, and the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) radar, each offering different advantages in the distance measurement precision, ability of measuring several distances simultaneously or only one distance, ease of implementation, measurement time, etc. Combining a two-dimensional scan with radar capability made it possible to obtain three-dimensional imaging. The numerous advantages of using the RTD as a terahertz-wave source—very small size, simple circuitry, low power consumption, no cooling requirements, potentially low cost—imply that such radar and imaging techniques have a good chance of being implemented in future practical applications. |
