Diabetic patients frequently have high bone fracture risks despite of the normal Bone mineral density (BMD). BMD is the main index to diagnose bone fracture risk in the case of osteoporosis. Ultrasonic techniques, which are non-invasive, inexpensive, and safe, can provide information of not only BMD but also elasticity. The nanoindentation technique can also provide elastic properties and hardness of bone tissue. In this study, we have investigated the effect of glycation on bone by comparing longitudinal wave velocity, elastic moduli and indentation hardness in control rats and streptozotocin (STZ) diabetic rats. The ultrasonic wave velocities and elastic modulus in bones of STZ rats decreased in the early stage of hyperglycemia. However, the elastic properties seemed to increase after long-term hyperglycemia. |
