[Invited Lecture] Antenna array integrated module for wide coverage using surface-mounted patch antenna and flexible substrate

(in English) An antenna array integrated module (AiM) for wide coverage is designed. By bending a cross-shaped flexible substrate which has 5 antenna planes, the AiM with 5 different radiating directions is realized. 6 surface-mounted patch antennas are mounted on each of the 5 antenna planes and 30 antennas are implemented for the AiM. To realize a whole spherical coverage with 3 AiMs, the bend angles are set to 60 deg in the vertical direction and 40 deg in the horizontal direction.
The gain coverage is calculated by simulation of the AiM and it is estimated to achieve a gain of 6 dBi or more in the desired field of view (0°≤θ≤180°,-60°≤φ≤60°) in the polar coordinate system. By measuring the EIRP radiation patterns of the fabricated AiM, it is confirmed that a gain of 6 dBi or more is realized as same as the simulated result.
In the 6-element antenna array on each antenna surface, the average value of the peak gain without transmission loss is derived. The average value of the peak gain is 6.7 dBi on each antenna plain and the antenna design with little variation is confirmed. Compared to the 7 dBi peak gain of the single antenna element in the author’s past paper, it is confirmed that the peak gain is reduced by 0.3 dB with the fabricated 6-element antenna array.
