In this study, we aim to realize the application of a hetero-core optical fiber bending sensor, which consists of a multimode optical fiber with a core diameter of 50 μm and single-mode optical fiber with a core diameter of 3 μm for the transmission line and for the hetero-core portion, respectively. In this paper, we evaluated the optical loss characteristics of a 50-3-50 type hetero-core optical fiber structure against bending displacement for sensors with different insertion lengths in the hetero-core portion. It was confirmed that the effect of bending displacement on the transmission line was reduced by using a bending loss insensitive multimode fiber. The 50-3-50 type hetero-core optical fiber with bending loss insensitive multimode fiber at an insertion length of 1.0 mm was shown to have high linearity with a sensitivity of 0.581 dB/mm for displacements of up to 5.0 mm. In addition, the optical loss monotonically increased with displacement for insertion lengths of 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 mm, suggesting that the sensor can be applied as a bending sensor within the range of linearity. |
