The mode dispersion in few-mode fibers (FMFs) determines the transmission performance of the mode multiplexed systems. In order to evaluate the mode dispersion, measuring the mode couplings with polarization rotation in FMFs is required. In this study, we show a method to measure the Jones matrix describing mode couplings in FMFs. Based on the Mueller matrix measurement in single-mode fibers, we propose the Jones matrix measurement in FMFs. Sequentially launching different types of Jones vectors into FMFs, the output Jones vectors are measured, driving the Jones matrix. In propagation of dual mods with dual polarization, we can derive 4$times$4 Jones matrix by inputting six types of Jones vectors. For n-mode FMF propagation, the 2n$times$2n Jones matrix can be specified by launching 4n – 2 types of vectors. |
