Power Recycling: A Fallacy of Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory Masataka Ohta (TIT) PN2021-80 |

Observation of LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) is by a highly precise Michelson interferometer, where, to make geographical size small while making optical path lengths long, passive Fabry-Perot resonators are used. Though most input light is reflected by input mirror of the resonators, it can be reflected again by an external power recycling mirror to the resonators to be recycled, which is “power recycling”. Of course, such amplification by passive components is impossible. Though the fallacy, seemingly, does not invalidate the observation results, unnecessary mirror or excessive noise by it purposelessly reduce accuracy and increase cost of gravitational-wave observatory. That is, by removing power recycling mirror, precision and sensitivity of LIGO can be improved. |
