The braille blocks support the blinds with cane to walk public road safe. The block has uneven surface to tell them the direction to go or dangerous spot. However, on the other hand, these blocks cause fall for aged people or are obstacles for people who use wheelchairs. To improve these situations from the perspective of universal design, more sophisticated guidance system is required.
In this study, we propose a new guidance system using a pickup coil. This system applied electromagnetic induction between a pair of transmit and receive coils to convey the surrounding situation to the blinds as voice information in a non-contact manner, and then no uneven surface is required. More concretely, a receiver pickup coil attached at the tip of cane picks up information from a transmission coil installed in pavement block, and received information is sent to bone conduction headphones. The problem to be solved are: 1) how to distinguish multiple information from different transmission coils, and 2) how to attenuate volume fluctuation for the distance change from the pickup coil to the transmission coil caused by swinging of cane. To solve these problems, we apply an amplitude modulation for automatic voice selection using synchronous detection and a volume normalization with simple filter. As a result of the experiments, it was confirmed that the pickup coil automatically selected and transmitted information with appropriate voice both whether recieve coil at the cane was stationary or swinging, and this showed effectiveness of signal processing of the proposed guidance system. |
