A study of back-ground noise reduction for underwater visible light communications using angular diversity receiver

(in English) Underwater optical wireless communication (UWOC) has tremendous capabilities for searching and excavating under sea resources however, the available area of UWOC has been limited in the deep ocean as it is severely suffered from solar noise and any other background noise in shallow water. This paper proposes UWOC using angular diversity receiver which is consisted of multiple photo diodes arranged at different angles for reducing solar noise. Also, we evaluate the bit error rate (BER) performance of proposed receiver when using equal gain combining and selection combining. As a result, the BER performance of the proposed system is better than that of the conventional system in which multiple PDs are placed in a plane.On the other hand, in the absence of the influence of solar noise, the BER performance of the proposed system is worse than that of the conventional method, however, it is shown that both methods can achieve a BER of $10^{-5}$ when the distance between transmitter and receiver is 6 m and the water condition is pure sea.
