Extensible Polarization-Adjusted Convolutional Codes and Its Application to Rateless Codes

(in English) Rateless codes have been proposed to realize efficient communications when the channel state information is not available at the transmitter. In 2016, Li et al. proposed a rateless coding method based on polar codes, which can achieve the channel capacity of a binary-input symmetric channel. This method assumes static channels that do not change over time whereas some practical channels would fluctuate over time, e.g., mobile communications, so that the messages may not be decoded at the rate close to or equal to the channel capacity via the method. To this end, Feng et al. focused on a wider class of channels, including the time-varying channel, and proposed a new rateless coding scheme based on polar codes. This paper proposes extensible systematic polarization adjusted convolutional (PAC) codes and two algorithms for the selection of the information index set for the proposed PAC codes. We then apply proposed extensible systematic PAC codes to the rateless coding method for time-varying channels. Computer simulations show that the decoding error performance of the proposed scheme with the designed information index set is superior to that of the conventional one.
