High-capacity fiber-optic communication systems employ coherent detection assisted by digital signal processing, called digital coherent optical communication technology, which has opportunity for applying to space and defense areas. In this report, we review the digital coherent technology in fiber-optic communications, show its extension to high-capacity free-space optical communications and wideband signal transmission and demultiplexing, and outlook the future with quantum technologies. |
