Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Bats acquire information about a target by emitting ultrasound pulses from their mouths or noses and listening to the echoes from the target. Due to the physical nature of sound wave propagation, it is expected that echolocation can acquire information on the surface shape of an object, as well as information on the backside of the object that is difficult to perceive visually (blind spot information). In this study, we investigated whether bats can use these information by echolocation. Four Japanese brown bats (Pipistrellus abramus) were used to discriminate the presence or absence and shape of a target (dome-shaped, 98 × 146 × 54 mm, made of resin) using an operant conditioning method. The results showed that the bats were able to discriminate differences in the texture and the shape of objects at the blind spot. Next, to investigate what acoustic features in the echoes were cues for the bats, we used acoustic simulations to obtain echoes from the targets which were used in the discrimination experiments, and found that bats were more likely to use temporal-frequency pattern as cues than the strength of the echoes from the objects.
