Stochastic geometry based handover analysis of aerial base station networks with different altitudes

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Aerial base stations (ABSs) using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently attracted attention because of their capability to provide adaptive coverage to ground users. However, there are various challenges for the realization of ABS networks, and handover management is a particularly important issue for improving user communication quality. The characteristics of handover in ABS networks are more complex than those in the existing terrestrial base stations owing to the differences in the altitudes of UAVs and their mobility. In this study, we theoretically analyze the characteristics of handover in ABS networks with different altitudes based on a stochastic geometry approach. By modeling the positions of UAVs as a three-dimensional Poisson point process, we derive the expected number of handovers in several different scenarios wherein the speed and direction of the movements of users and UAVs are time-dependent. Furthermore, we derive its upper bound in a more mathematically tractable form. We also show numerical examples based on the analytical results and evaluate the impacts of various system parameters on the handover performance.
