Data Rate Improvement by Combinatorial Optimization of Access Points and Intelligent Reflecting Surface in Joint Transmission

(in English) Wireless local area networks (WLANs) have become an essential part of our day-to-day life. The massive number of connections to the network is expected to face tremendous growth owing to an enormous amount of connected Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Hence, a multi-access point (AP) communication environment for joint transmission is introduced and is being discussed by IEEE 802.11be Standardization Committee.
However, the high-frequency band faces interference issues in a multi-AP environment due to blockages of radio signals by other APs, and other static devices. Therefore, in this study, we introduce the application of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in a multi-AP network to improve the radio propagation environment. IRS provides different transmission paths for communication with multi-APs by bypassing blockages. However, interference to other STAs may easily increase as the number of paths increases in JT communication, even if blockages are avoided. Hence, in this study, we improve the data rate by selecting the destination of an AP and IRS while considering the influence of interfering signals.
