Aerial base stations (ABSs) using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) have been gaining attention in recent years for improving the capacity and coverage of future mobile networks.
However, the placement problem of ABSs that maximizes the overall communication quality of users is challenging owing to complicated air-to-ground channel characteristics and inter-cell interference.
Moreover, ABSs are faced with the problem of limited available power resources.
In this study, we consider an ABS network in which ABSs perform radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting from terrestrial base stations and propose a distributed ABS deployment method that optimizes the performance of the energy harvesting and downlink transmission jointly.
We assume that each user is covered by an ABS when both energy harvesting and downlink transmission have sufficient quality, and formulate the ABS deployment problem as the maximization problem of the expected number of covered users.
By applying the distributed push-sum to this problem, we develop a distributed algorithm in which each ABS updates its position by using only local information and communicating with its neighboring ABSs.
Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method successfully improves both the energy harvesting and communication quality of users. |
