A Proposal of Congestion Avoidance Communication Method using Explicit Congestion Notification in HTTP/3 Applications

(in English) In recent years, a wide variety of devices, including smartphones and connected cars, have been equipped with communication functions. As a result, data traffic has increased, and the resulting increase in peak network load has become an issue. The increase in peak network load causes problems such as a temporary drop in communication throughput and a decrease in facility utilization efficiency, so there is a need to control the peak load and equalize communication traffic. In this paper, we propose, for applications that tolerant delay, a congestion avoidance communication method that suspends data transmission during network congestion and resumes it when the congestion is cleared. The method utilizes Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) mechanism implemented in IP layer. We implement and evaluate the proposed method for an application that communicates using HTTP/3, and confirm that the proposed method can achieve the expected behavior.
