Changes in the Bank's Management of Funds Caused by the Shrinking Balance Sheets of Japan's Electronics Companies

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper is a continuation of the contents presented at previous EE meetings (held on November 18, 2021, January 28, 2022, March 10, 2022, and July 14, 2022). The with-corona era has brought rapid progress in DX worldwide. As a result, a serious shortage of semiconductors occurred in the electronics industry, exposing the fact that Japan's semiconductor self-sufficiency rate had fallen drastically. In the previous EE meeting in July 2022, we graphed the financial condition of Japanese electronics firms over a period of about 30 years from 1989 to 2019. The results showed that the capital adequacy ratios of many firms declined in the late 1990s, indicating that their financial conditions deteriorated, and that they did not recover with the IT bubble around 1999-2000, but continued to stay in a low level after 2000. As Japanese firms continued to experience low growth or contraction, their debt also declined, affecting the management of funds by commercial banks. 2005 Bank of Japan Flow of Funds statistics pointed out that commercial banks' fund management had shifted from corporate lending to government bonds. We examine what happens to the balance sheets of firms, commercial banks, and the government when this occurs.
