In recent years, the application of planar metallic photonic crystal (MPhC) structures have been attracting a lot of attention in millimeter and submillimeter wave bands. Generally, planar MPhC is composed of an infinite repetition of metallic posts or other unit cells sandwiched by a parallel-plate waveguide. However, to construct an actual finite-sized circuit such as a MPhC point-defect resonator, the periodicity needs to be truncated. Therefore, for implementing practical compact and high-Q MPhC point-defect resonators, it is necessary to determine the structural parameters such as the number of wall layer (period number of metallic posts used as the side-wall) and thickness of resonator. In this study, we investigate the relationship between the Q value due to each loss in triangular lattice and square lattice MPhC point-defect resonators and structural parameters using numerical calculation techniques. Finally, a filter is designed by MPhC point-defect resonators with different number of wall layers and thicknesses for comparison. |
