Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A non-spatial auditory cue reportedly enhances visual search performance when the auditory cue is synchronized with a change in a visual target's features. This phenomenon is called the "pip and pop effect". This study investigated whether the pip and pop effect could occur in visual search tasks for older adults. Two experimental conditions were set: with-sound and no-sound. In the with-sound condition, the onsets of auditory stimuli were synchronized with colour changes in visual target stimuli. In the no-sound condition, visual search displays were shown without any sound. Similar to young adults, we found that older adults responded more quickly in the with-sound condition than in the no-sound condition. These results suggest that older adults utilize non-spatial auditory cues for visual search tasks as effectively as young adults.
