[Poster Presentation] Fast and High-accuracy Channel Estimation Method for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Combining Load Modulation and Compressed Sensing Techniques

(in English) In this study, we propose a channel estimation method for reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) combining the load modulation and compressed sensing techniques. In this method, a load-modulating channel estimation method is applied to only a few elements by utilizing the phenomenon that the received signal strength (RSS) changes via mutual coupling when the loads in the elements are controlled. The overall RIS channels are reconstructed from the signal information (direction of arrival, amplitude, and phase) of all arrival waves estimated based on the compressive sensing. To improve the channel estimation accuracy, we optimize the element array to which the load-modulating channel estimation method is applied. In addition, we reduce the number of angle bins by pre-beamforming (PBF) with the optimized element array to shorten the calculation time. Numerical analysis shows the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation method by evaluating the estimation accuracy for the element arrays and the effect of angle bin reduction by applying PBF.
