In order to handle digital modulation signals used in beyond 5G systems, RF power amplifiers with a wide-dynamic-range characteristic are required. However, the circuit configuration of the wide-dynamic-range power amplifiers is complex. Therefore, circuit insertion loss degrades efficiency performance, especially at a quasi-millimeter-wave region.In this report, a quasi-millimeter-wave-band outphasing power amplifier with simple structure has been designed using two 50-Ω design power amplifiers. It is expected that incorporating a 50-Ω design power amplifier into an outphasing power amplifier can simplify the circuit and reduce losses.In this configuration, the matching circuit must be carefully designed to achieve high efficiency at both low and high input power levels.The details of the design concept and the measured results of the fabricated GaN HEMT outphasing amplifiers at 28-GHz band are reported. |
