Investigation of the Impact of Beacons by Unused Access Points on Wireless LAN Communication

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In urban areas, there are many Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Access Points (APs) deployed to provide Internet access services for customers. Many customers who visit there use Internet access through the WLAN. Among these WLANs, some APs have no Stations (STAs); we call them unused APs. WLAN APs send the beacons every 100 [msec] with low transmission rates for backward compatibility to some STAs with different Wi-Fi standards. The unused APs also send the beacons even though they have no STAs; thereby, the airtime of the beacon transmission will be wasteful for data transmission of WLANs having STAs. Therefore, we study the impact of the beacon from unused APs on the data frame transmission by a WLAN with channel bonding. Our experimental results show little impact on the throughput performance of an AP that employs CSMA/CA with RTS/CTS for MAC control. However, we also show that the throughput performance of some APs, one of which doesn't use RTS/CTS, or controls the frame transmission rate by frame retransmission, will degrade by the beacon from unused APs.
