Trust, Altruism and Relational Mobility in Virtual Reality and Reality

With the spread of VR technology, while the construction of relationships with others in a VR space is rapidly developing, little research has been conducted on the culture in a VR environment, or the psychology and behavior in it. In cultural psychology, cultural-specific psychology and behaviors are considered adaptive strategies under social-ecological environments (i.e., relational mobility, or RM). In this study, we targeted a community where fresh users of VR Chat interacted with each other continuously over two weeks. We conducted a series of surveys at four time-points over the course. The community members’ perceptions of RM between VR and reality, as well as their trust and altruistic behaviors under VR / reality were measured. Results showed that although we didn’t observe changes over time, the participants clearly distinguished differences between the social-ecological environment (RM) of VR versus that of reality, and they adjusted their trust with others according to the environment. However, altruistic behavior was not affected by the VR/reality environment. |
