Development of Virtual Boccia for Children with Muscular Dystrophy at Special Needs School

(in English) Muscular dystrophy is a progressive disease in which skeletal muscle degeneration and necrosis result in decreased muscle strength and motor function. We developed boccia using VR technology for the purpose of maintaining the QOL of children with muscular dystrophy who will need long-term medical treatment in the future. Our VR Boccia was a desktop type that can be played by looking at the monitor of a notebook PC. We used a flat interface so that children in wheelchairs can operate it on their laps. We also devised ways to control it even with weak fingertip strength. In this study, we asked 6 healthy adults to play our VR Boccia and we conducted subjective evaluations of its usability. As a result, it was shown that our VR Boccia has functions as a social game and simulator, although there are still some improvements to be made.
