| (in English) | Wearing a mask possibly disrupts social interactions because of partially covering facial expressions. A smiling mask, on which a smiling mouth is printed, is expected to be a means of overcoming this problem. Here, we examined how wearing a smiling mask would influence interpersonal impressions. Experiments 1 and 3a measured emotional impressions (i.e., emotional valence and eeriness) for persons with the smiling mask and typical cloth mask, and without a mask. Experiments 2 and 3b used persons with a transparent mask (i.e., a mask whose area around the mouth is transparent), instead of the typical cloth mask. The results showed that the persons with the smiling masks were consistently evaluated more eerily and more unpleasantly than the others. Our findings suggest that realism inconsistency between the printed mouth and facial parts causes devaluation effects. | |
