Religion is usually considered to be a source of psychological comfort and relief for those who suffer, but it can lead to destruction and violence too. Cases of several notorious cults clearly show how people that start with spiritual search can end up as terrorists or religious zealots, killing or dying in the name of religion. Suggested reasons for such asocial and fanatic behavior were often connected with “brainwashing” – a term, which was coined in 1950s, to explain the phenomenon of mind control by certain psychological techniques. Analysis of several cases demonstrates that there are some common methods and manipulative techniques that can be effectively used to reduce ability of critical thinking in an individual, change his moral attitudes and eventually form a different mindset. Moreover, these methods are used nowadays outside religious cults, in order to make a desirable worldview among members of certain organizations or societies. |
