This paper presents a relationship between a height and a fractional bandwidth of a ring microstrip antenna fed by an L-probe. The proposed antenna consists of a ring-shaped radiating patch element arranged over an L-shaped feeding probe on a ground plane. Air-layers are placed among the ring patch, the L-probe, and the ground plane. The ring patch is excited by the L-probe with electro-magnetic couplings. The design frequency of the proposed antenna is around 0.6 GHz. It is known that a microstrip antenna fed by an L-probe exhibits wideband performance when its height is set to approximately 0.1 wavelengths of the operating frequency. In this paper, broadband designs of the proposed antenna with a height of less than 0.1 wavelengths of the center frequency are investigated by the simulation. It reveals that a fractional bandwidth of the designed antenna with a height of less than 0.08 wavelengths of the center frequency is rapidly increased in proportion to the antenna height. For the antenna height of 0.08 to 0.17 wavelengths of the center frequency, the fractional bandwidth of the proposed antenna with less than -7.4 dB reflection is slowly increased in the range of approximately 33% to 40%. It is concluded that the ring patch antenna fed by an L-probe exhibits good broadband characteristics when the antenna height is above about 0.08 wavelengths of the center frequency. |
