Underdetermined DOA Estimation of Correlated Signals Using Atomic Norm Minimization

(in English) This paper discusses the underdetermined Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) estimation of correlated sources where the number of sources exceeds the number sensors using Atomic Norm Minimization (ANM) and sparse arrays. Traditionally, the underdetermined DOA estimation of uncorrelated sources problem is tackled by improving the degrees of freedom (DOFs) of sparse array coarray. However, when sources are correlated, it is difficult to create a correct difference coarray due to the influence of mutual correlation, hence, DOA estimation is not possible. Interestingly, even under correlated sources, the ANM can be used to realize a Toeplitz matrix with phase information equivalent to the correlation matrix of uncorrelated sources. Therefore, we propose a method via ANM that mimics the difference coarray of a sparse array thereby achieving underdetermined DOA estimation of correlated sources. Simulation examples demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.
