Switching network algorithm of a smartphone between WLAN and cellular is not based on the quality of the communication channel, which significantly impacts the user when connecting to a low-quality network. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the quality of the WLAN before switching. Parameters such as BSSID/SSID help predict the rate of WLAN, but it is difficult to collect them from a privacy protection perspective. In addition, complex machine learning algorithms cannot be employed to learn and infer quality on a smartphone. We employ Federated Learning and FedHLCR [1] to achieve large-scale training while protecting users’ privacy in the training data, and predicting the quality of WLAN with high accuracy using a lightweight algorithm. We show that the quality of WLANs can be infered with high accuracy and the training and inference times can be achieved within one second, and network selection based on the proposed method can reduce the disuption time by up to 85%. |
