A study on a PLC-based six-mode multi/demultiplexer using Y-branch mode converter and optical unitary converter

(in English) A selective/non-selective six-mode (de)multiplexer using planar lightwave circuits (PLC) is designed to realize mode-division multiplexing (MDM) transmission. It is shown that the use of a mode converter with a Y-branch waveguide as a component of the (de)multiplexer improves the wavelength dependence and the tolerance to waveguide width changes. It is also shown that the mode selectivity of the mode multiplexer can be controlled by an optical unitary converter. Finally, we evaluate the performance of selective/non-selective 6-mode multiplexers and show that the crosstalk in the selective (de)multiplexer and the mode-dependent loss (MDL) in the non-selective (de)multiplexer are sufficiently small.
