Factors that compose the Kinetic Orbison illusion
Hikari Matsunaga, Hiroyuki Ito, Tama Kanematsu (Kyushu Univ.) HIP2022-76
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The Kinetic Orbison illusion is a phenomenon in which the motion trajectory of a dot that physically moves on a square is perceived to be bent due to the effect of concentric circles. The purpose of this study was to describe this phenomenon qualitatively and quantitatively. First, we compared this illusion with that from a stationary Orbison figure. Then, we examined the factors affecting this illusion: inner and outer circles, the speed of dot motion, and the difference in luminance between the background and the circles. The results showed that the amount of the dynamic illusion was greater than that of the stationary figure, particularly when the eyes pursued the dot. The illusion was observed even when the trajectory of the dot and the circles did not intersect. These results suggest that motion streaks are not important for this illusion and that there may be another mechanism for the illusion other than the interaction between the physical line and the motion streaks.
