When Input Integers are Given in the Unary Numeral Representation -- (Preliminary Report) --
Tomoyuki Yamakami (U of Fukui) COMP2022-37
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Many NP-complete problems take integers as part of their input instances. These input integers are given in general in the form of the "binary" numeral representation and the lengths of such binary integers are used as a basis unit of measuring the computational complexity of the problems.
In sharp contrast, the "unary" numeral representation has been known to bring a remarkably different effect onto the computational complexity of the problems. Unfortunately, no systematic study seems to have been focused on the difference between the computational effects caused by the binary and the unary representations of input integers. This paper attempts to spotlight an issue of how the unary representation affects the computational complexity of various combinatorial problems and to exhibit an intriguing area of studying such unary effects in computational complexity theory.
