The Ethical Problems of Overzealous Fandom
Maaya Iwao, Nobuyuki Yoshinaga (Yamaguchi Prefectural Univ.) SITE2022-63 IA2022-86
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) It is common to be a fan of someone and most fan activities may be justified. However, some fans actions can not be justified when they cause harm. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the criterion by which the actions of fans can be classified as acceptable.First, it explains how people can feel satisfaction from engaging in fan actions. Second, it points out that fan activities are changing with the advancement of technology. Third, it clarifies the criterion by which fan actions can be classified as acceptable. The reasons why fandom provides people with a sense of community is that they can fulfill their desire for ``self-love'', ``recognition'' and ``the pleasures of gaming''.Through satisfying these desires, people can feel ``vitality to live" and ``their place in a community". With the diversification of fan activities, people can obtain more infomation of the person who is the subject of their fan activities. In this situation, people will develop more intimacy and an increasing level of commitment to the person. Such fan actions often deviate from what is normal. As a result, the target of the fandom will gradually become exhausted. In this paper, this phenomenon is defined as the ``OSHITUKE Problem'' and to avoid this problem it argues that ``The Harm Principle'' is a useful criterion to verify what kind of fan actions are acceptable.
