Smartphones and lateral collision biases

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The present study examined the effect of smartphone use on rightward collisions. The rightward collisions were attributable to the rightward attentional bias in the extrapersonal space. Pedestrians using smartphones tend to fixate on the phone most of the time and thus tend not to look at the surroundings (i.e., extrapersonal space). In this study, I used a narrow doorway task in which participants walked through a narrow doorway either with or without using a smartphone. While using the smartphone, participants performed either a verbal or spatial task. The rightward collisions decreased when participants used smartphones. The type of task produced no effect on the lateral collision biases. These results suggest that not hemispheric activation but the rightward attentional bias in the extrapersonal space should be responsible for the decrease in the rightward collision bias.
