Study on Subarray Beam Control for Sub-Terahertz-Band MIMO Spatial Multiplexing

(in English) In 6th generation mobile communication system (6G), the use of sub-Terahertz band (100–300 GHz) is being considered to realize ultra high-speed communications exceeding 100 Gbps. Ultra high-speed communications require spatial multiplexing with MIMO systems in addition to the use of wide bandwidth. The number of layers realized by a MIMO system cannot exceed the number of multipaths. However, it has been reported that the number of multipaths in the sub-Terahertz band is extremely small compared to the millimeter wave band used in 5th generation mobile communication system (5G). Therefore, spatial multiplexing effects in the sub-Terahertz band are considered to be strongly dependent on multipath propagation characteristics. In this paper, we study the effect of spatial multiplexing by a hybrid MIMO system in the sub-Terahertz band and clarify the beam control method of subarrays to achieve efficient spatial multiplexing. It further discusses the results of eigenvalue distributions of channel gram matrices and power allocation to each layer. The results revealed that the maximum number of beam directions allocated to the subarrays is three to achieve larger MIMO channel capacity.
